Day 3 - Visit to Luquillo

May 26th, 2012 · No Comments

A little town located near the condos is called Luquillo.  It is a very quaint little town that we can walk to.  Joyce tells us that every town has a town square and church.  The town square is where the locals gather and events are planned.  On the same street as the square is the Mayor’s Office and local police station.  The students gathered in the office of Mayor Jose “Nelo” Gonzalez Ortiz. The Mayor gave a brief overview of the history of the town and important improvements to the area.  The Mayor’s familly is a family of teachers.  He was Joyce’s art teacher while she  attended school in PR.  In the upcoming election one of the big issues now is the question of statehood for Puerto Rico.  The students asked many questions to the Mayor about the history of the commonwealth and the advantages and disadvantages of the statehood.

After the Mayor’s visit, the group headed to the El Yunque Rain Forest.  This is high up in the mountains. There were several stops going up so the students could venture into the waterfalls.  At the top, a sightseeing tower was built.  The students enjoyed climbing the tower and taking photos.   The rain forest was an amazing place to visit where it rains everyday.  We were lucky, it didn’t rain while we were there.  After traveling down the mountains a bit, there was a mile hike down a path to the El Rio River for some swimming.  The water was cold, but the students braved the cold water for some fun.  The rope swing added to the laughter as the students took turns playing Tarzan and Jane.

This exciting day ended with a homecooked meal at the Cruz/Sanchez home.  After dinner, a presentation was made by a local woman police officer.  She explained her job to the students, told about the education she was required to complete for this position, and what it was like to be a woman on the police force.  The students loved her pink handcuffs!
