Day 4 - Jardin de Envejecidos

May 26th, 2012 · No Comments

I feel our visit to the Senior Center in Luquillo was the greatest experience for the students so far.  We had planned to visit the Center, help make lunch, play some games, and ask questions in Spanish.  Instead, the seniors entertained us.  There are approximately 80 seniors in the “3rd age” as they call it that visit the Center each day.  The social counselor, Michael discussed the importance of the 3rd age being active and feeling a part of the community.  The seniors had been working on a show for us for 2 months.  This show was a combination of singing, bell playing, and a amazing solo written by one of the ladies.  It was so fun!  All the students practiced their Spanish skills - even though most of the seniors could speak English quite well. The conversations were full of laughter and conversation.

When we contacted the Center a few months ago and asked them what they needed.  The director said that the Center only had 1 small 13 inch TV.  Walmart graciously donated a TV for us to pick up in the PR Walmart and deliver by the Keystone students to the Center.  I’m not sure who was more excited, the seniors or our students.  Lunch was prepared for us instead of us for them.  It was a wonderful experience by all chatting with the 3rd age generation of PR.
