Puerto Rico - Day 5 by Devon Cebulko

May 27th, 2014 · No Comments

After we woke up, we went to visit the elementary school called La Escuela Desiderio Mendez Rodriguez. Although their school year is over, the principal was able to get some of the students to come and be apart of out experience there. We met the students and painted sayings on their school building in Spanish. The students really appreciated what we were doing and kept telling us how beautiful it looked. We also had time to have conversations, play frisbee, and dodgeball with them. They were very friendly towards us and had many questions to ask. They made a lot of conversation with us and if they couldn’t speak English they would find someone to translate for them. I was really surprised at how many of the young children knew how to speak English and Spanish so well. When we told them we were from Pennsylvania, they had many relatives that were from around that state which was also surprising. It shows that people from Puerto Rico are leaving there to come closer to us to have a better life and get a good education to earn a good job with a degree. One of the students there was only in 6th grade and already knew three languages. Children are getting so smart and educated early on now. I think the students are so blessed to know so much already at a early stage. After we had lunch with the principal, we left and went to the water company. They taught us how important there job is and how to keep the water cleaned and how it gets processed. I found out we are able to drink the water because it is still from the USA and not part of Mexico.
